Every Scoop Has a Story: Meet Marion Mason
Meet Marion Mason, a beloved pillar of St. Andrews, whose lifelong dedication to her hometown continues to shape and inspire the community.
Marion’s family roots in St Andrews run deep. Her great-grandfather helped establish The New Golf Club in 1902, and her mother and aunt grew up near the harbour, a place Marion and her brothers later shared with their own children. That same harbour is now a place where Marion's commitment shines brightest.
As a long-standing member of the Harbour Trust’s Board of Trustees, Marion has played a vital role in preserving one of St. Andrews’ most cherished landmarks. Following Storm Babet in 2023, which caused significant damage to the pier, Marion led a local fundraising effort, raising over £50,000 through generous donations and support from local businesses. Her leadership turned crisis into opportunity, uniting the community in a shared purpose.
Marion’s professional life was equally rooted in the traditions of St Andrews. At just 15, she began her career as an office junior at The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, rising to become Secretary to the Members’ Secretary. She played a key role in supporting the Open Championships across the UK, managing logistics including accommodation, press, payroll, and even prize cheques, each one meticulously typed and posted after the event.
She later took time away from her career to raise her daughters, Fiona and Marion Jr. Both girls fondly remember their time working at Jannettas Gelateria during school holidays, a St. Andrews tradition in itself. Fiona even recalls making breakfast for local favourites Lewis and Ross on school mornings!
When asked about her favourite gelato flavour, Marion fondly described Italian Chocolate Creams — soft caramel centres dipped in rich dark chocolate. Inspired by her story, we're honoured to craft a special flavour in tribute to her: a scoop of memory, love, and legacy.
