Our Story

Our Story of Jannettas
c1918 Bennet (centre) with sons Charlie and Bennett Jnr.

As you can imagine, we have many stories to tell, and memories to savour…

In 1908, my Great Grandfather Bennett Jannetta started the family business at 31 South Street, St Andrews as a soda parlour and tobacconist. My grandfather Charlie, at the same time as maintaining the ice-cream side of the business, expanded into fish and chips by opening a restaurant next door. And then in the late 1960s and 70s, my parents expanded the range of ice-cream flavours dramatically and refurbished the shop into a modern Italian Gelateria.

My husband Owen and I have been running the business for over 25 years. Our aim is to carry on the family tradition of making only the best quality Gelato, create new and delicious flavours and indulge our customers!

Each day, we put our heart and soul into our business and the feedback suggests that it’s working. In 2014, Jannettas won the Golden Cone Award, making us officially the best ice-cream shop in Scotland, followed by The Courier Retail Business of the Year.  We were also delighted to be a finalist in the Family Business of the Year category and there have been many more since.

Experts say that it’s exceptional for a business to last four generations.  Indeed, many ingredients are needed to keep us ahead of our game, but the essential one is passion.

So pop in, and create your own Jannettas memory!

Our Awards

We are extremely proud just to have been nominated for the following awards, yet alone to have won some.

In 2015 we were equally delighted to have won for a second year in a row The Courier Retail Business of the Year 2015 as well as being a finalist in the Italian Awards Scotland’s Best Gelateria category. Also during 2015 we celebrated Mark Edwards, a supervisor in our Cafe, being nominated and winning Scotland’s Best Barista at the Italian Awards. In March 2016 on Friday 18, we were thrilled to have won Fife Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Food & Drink Award sponsored by Clydesdale Bank.

Our Charity & Community Work

Supporting our local and greater community

Jannettas as a family and business is very much rooted in our local community and we love being able to give something back where we can to help make a difference to people and organisations around here.

Engaging with our local and greater community is a key part of who we are and we believe it’s important to our continued success. So where we can get involved, we do.

Nominated charities and organisations

Every year we choose local charities, organisations and events to support, often causes close to our heart or with long-established links to our family and business. If you wish us to consider your charity, event or cause please get in touch by writing to

Development and education

As long-running family business, we know the importance of passing on expertise and business enthusiasm to the next generation. That’s why we particularly like to engage with the local community through education partnership programmes, such as our ones with Madras College and the University of St Andrews. We believe if we can inspire through our business this will help prepare young people for success in the workplace, building their understanding of the work environment and their employability skills.

We also actively support charitable youth organisations, such as Scouts and Guides, encouraging them to come in and get a better understanding of Jannettas’ role within the community – seeing our business in action, discovering our history and the art of gelato-making, and inevitably doing some tasting!

If your organisation wishes to suggest a potential educational partnership programme with Jannettas, please contact Owen & Nicola Hazel on 01334 473285.

It is always a pleasure to get involved, where we can and when gelato-making allows time! We actively encourage Jannettas’ links with our community and charities, and always embrace new opportunities to get involved whenever it’s possible.
