A charity bake-off, which sees University of St Andrews medics create gruesome bakes based on gory body bits, aims to boost organ donation throughout the local community.
The Bute Medical Society’s ‘Great Bute-ish Bake-Off’ event, now in its third year, was held in the University’s Medical School earlier this week and judged, once again, by Jannettas Gelateria.
The winner was ‘the amazing brain’, created by Abigail Gilchrist (18), who is in his first year studying medicine.
Not only did the entrants have to design and bake the cake but they also had to replicate accurately the intricacies of the organ. With this in mind, Jannettas judges were joined by they baked – impressive!two retired lecturers from the School of Medicine, Dr Susan Whiten and Dr Jim Aiton.
Owen Hazel, co-owner said, “We were delighted to have been invited along to judge this contest again, and it was a real challenge to choose a winner from the extremely high calibre of gory creations on offer. We were judging the taste, texture and look of the cakes while the others judges were checking that the cakes were anatomically correct. Despite its rather un-nerving and extremely realistic appearance, we’re relieved to say that the winning bake was delicious!”
Tory Walter, Vice-President, Bute Medical Society said, “Our relationship with Jannettas is long-standing and to have members of Jannettas staff personally involved in one of our events was very important to us. This was the third bake-off that the Bute Medical Society has held in conjunction with the Organ Donation Society to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation. The main goal of the event is to encourage people to sign up to be organ donors as well as raise money for the charities that the Bute Medical Society is supporting.”
The Jannettas judges were Barbie Murray, Manager and Sandra Imrie, Kitchen Supervisor. This year, the charitable event raised £127, with funds being donated to this year’s Bute Medical Society Charities – Water for Africa, One Million Miles for Ellie and Movember.
The University of St Andrews Organ Donation Society was inspired by the tragic death of St Andrews student Alex Richardson in 2009. His mother, Annie, conceived the idea and has worked closely with the NHS and St Andrews’ students to develop the scheme.
Jannettas Gelateria, St Andrews is open between 9am and 10pm, seven days a week. For more information, visit www.jannettas.co.uk.
