We’re already over a month into 2018, the snow has finally melted and the promise of spring is in the air. This time of year is always exciting as we make plans for the months ahead and wonder what the new season will bring, but this year is a particularly important one for Jannettas Gelateria, as we celebrate our 110th anniversary.
So much has changed in the past 110 years since Jannettas was founded by Bennett Jannetta, Nicola’s great-grandfather, but one thing has remained constant: the top-secret recipe that we use to create our delicious, creamy gelato. Watch this space to find out more about our plans to mark our 110th year, and learn how you can help us celebrate this milestone in Jannettas history.
Not only is this the 110th year of Jannettas, but February is also a particularly important month for Owen and Nicola. The 19th February 2018 marks Owen and Nicola’s 23rd anniversary of joining the business!
Now, we can’t mention February without talking about Valentine’s Day. Although February 14th is now recognised as the international day of love, the origins of Valentine’s Day are a little more sombre – all dating back to a mysterious, third-century saint who suffered a brutal fate. According to legend, St Valentine of Terni was martyred in 269BC for flouting the ban on marriages, imposed by Emperor Claudius II, and continuing to marry Christian couples in secret. After being sentenced to death for his crimes, Valentine became the patron saint of love, young people and marriage, with his feast day on February 14th later established by Pope Gelasius I in 496BC.
Away from long-standing traditions, what better way to celebrate St Valentine than with something you’ll really love? Here at Jannettas we’ll be serving our special Valentine’s sharing boards, including profiteroles, macarons, raspberry sorbet and chocolate gateaux. Delicious! If you haven’t already, make sure to book a table for your Valentine’s Day date – just call us on 01334 473285. We also have a range of Valentine’s Day sundaes and hot drinks to choose from.
At Jannettas, we’ve been helping to spread the love recently by working with the Bute Medics Society to create a special Arabian Night gelato flavour for their charity ball – featuring cardamom, pistachio, pomegranate and rose, topped with a sprinkling of edible gold glitter. If you have a special event coming up this year, give us a call – we’d love to work with you.
We’re also working with the S6 Retail students at Auchmuty High School to support their enterprise pop-up shop, and recently hosted the 8th Fife Strathkinness’ Beaver Scouts colony. The past few weeks in St Andrews have certainly been busy!
And finally, make sure to stop in past the café this month to sample our range of limited-edition flavours for Chinese New Year. We’ll be serving up a choice of black sesame, spiced mango, Chinese almond cookie and matcha and coconut gelatos, available until the end of February. From all of us here at Jannettas, we wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous new year in the Year of the Dog.
